Project Snowball
Our core competence is the integration of our technology, into various products/vehicles of partners and to adapt our technology to our customer’s specific need. To provide an insight into our typical mode of operation we give you the example of project snowball.
The Austrian Institute for Avalanche Research is engaged in the measurement of the movement of avalanche layers. Therefore regular field experiments are made. For the application to measure the movement of avalanche layers we developed our “snowball”, which is an adaptation of our IMU to specifications of the Institute. Several Snowballs are blown up together with the avalanche and deliver measuring data of motion in avalanche layers.
First Field Experiments Successfully Completed
Initial situation
During an appointment with the Federal Research and Training Centre for Forests, Natural Hazards and Landscape the topic of measuring the movement of avalanche layers emerged. The researchers arrange field tests regularly in which avalanches are created and movements are observed. Because our IMU can measure movements the researchers envisioned utilizing several IMU’s together with an avalanche to verify the movements.
The challenge
To use our IMU in an avalanche was something pretty new for us; however we took the challenge to adapt our IMU to the customer’s needs!
Snowball under construction
In the first step of the project we adapted our technology to the requirements of the Federal Research and Training Centre for Forests, Natural Hazards and Landscape. The second step was to design and build an encasement that is suitable to the conditions that exist in an avalanche.
Result
During this project we built an entirely new prototype to perfectly meet the needs of the researchers.
